Hitting zero emissions with electric powertrain technology
This Mobility Trend Talk will see us chat with respected experts from the automotive and mobility industries about life after conventional combustion engines. We’ll also tackle the question of whether a combination of battery (BEV) and fuel cell (FCEV) vehicle technology can lead us to climate neutrality faster than using just one system or the other.
The experts to feature in what promises to be a fascinating, informative discussion are:
- Martin Roemheld, who is Head of Business Development at ELLI and until recently headed up Volkswagen’s eMobility services. He’s constantly pushing for eMobility to be rolled out on a mass-market basis.
- Ferry M.M. Franz, Director of Hydrogen Affairs Europe & the Berlin Group Representative Office at Toyota Motor Europe, in which role he’s focused on sustainable, innovative mobility (both hydrogen and electric) as well as ways of working together with associations and government.
Dr. Hans Henning Thies is Head of Strategic Business Development and Digitalization at GP JOULE Connect. He’s responsible for the modeling, ongoing development, and optimization of charging infrastructures and charging algorithms, as well as High Power Charging. Further focus areas include innovation and new technologies.

Towards zero emissions with electric powertrain technology
The European Commission’s ‘Fit for 55’ climate package stipulates the end of the road for internal combustion vehicles from 2035. But the Commission is neutral when it comes to the alternative technologies required – all new vehicles, whether for personal or goods transport, will have to be zero-emission, while member states are expected to provide not only an electric charging infrastructure but also hydrogen fuel stations. So, is a world in which road traffic is powered by both batteries and fuel cells better than one leaning on just one type of technology?
Answering that question depends on several criteria relevant to the particular use case. In this expert panel, we’ll talk about a possible roadmap towards achieving zero emissions – and the respective roles battery and fuel cell technology can play.

Ferry M.M. Franz, Director of Hydrogen Affairs Europe & the Berlin Group Representative Office at Toyota Motor Europe
Ferry M.M. Franz has been Director of the Berlin Group Representative Office Berlin at Toyota Motor Europe since 2017. In April 2021, he was additionally appointed Director of Hydrogen Affairs Europe. Since joining Toyota Germany in 2005 as Dealer Network Development Manager, he has also worked as Lexus Sales Director and General Manager for Dealer Development – and taken overall responsibility for Lexus Germany. Franz studied law at the University of Cologne and economics at the University of Wuppertal.
Martin Roemheld, Head of Business Development at ELLI
Martin Roemheld is Head of Business Development at ELLI and until recently headed up Volkswagen’s eMobility services. He was also involved in founding Volkswagen’s ELLI startup and led the company as its CEO. Before moving to Volkswagen, he spent several years working for the BMW Group as Head of Product Management Energy Services. Roemheld studied Industrial Production Services at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and holds an engineering degree.
Dr. Hans Henning Thies, Head of Strategic Business Development and Digitalization at GP JOULE Connect
Dr. Hans Henning Thies has been Head of Strategic Business Development, Innovation, and eMobility consulting at GP JOULE Connect since 2019. Last year, he also took over responsibility for digitalization. His first role, in 2017, was Head of Charging Infrastructure Development. Prior to that, he worked in various regulatory roles at E.ON Avacon, as well as managing multiple large projects. Having studied Technology Management at FH Kiel, specializing in energy technology and the energy industry, he completed a master’s degree in industrial engineering with a focus on energy management at the Bergische Wuppertal University. His subsequent doctorate covered large-scale optimization models for networks and network operation.
